Transferring players

FMRTE can arrange a transfer for Football Manager to complete, move a player straight away, loan them, swap two players or release a player. All of these need a loaded savegame and an activated license.

For a complete walkthrough, follow Move a player and check the result.

Arrange a transfer

This is the default on Move to club. FMRTE gives Football Manager an accepted deal, and the game completes the move on the date you choose. The fee, club finances, player history and news are the game's own.

  1. Open the player and select Move to club.
  2. Choose the destination in To. See Choose the destination.
  3. Leave Transfer selected and Move now clear.
  4. Enter the Transfer Fee. It starts at 0.
  5. Choose the Transfer Date. It starts on the next day and must be after the current game date.
  6. If the deal has more to it, tick Set transfer terms. See Set transfer terms.
  7. With Football Manager paused, select Save Changes.

Move to club with Transfer selected, a destination club, a transfer fee and a date

FMRTE shows Transfer arranged. Advance FM to the selected date to complete it. Until that date the player stays at their club with their current contract. The deal appears on the player's Future Transfer tab and under View Future Transfers, where you can change it. To keep the deal, save in Football Manager.

The new contract keeps the player's current wage and agreed playing time, and runs until 30 June three years after the transfer. A free agent gets a wage based on the destination club's squad and no clauses or bonuses.

Choose the destination

The To list starts empty, so nothing moves until you pick a club. It shows the clubs run by human managers, leaving out the player's own club. Other club… opens a search for any other club.

Once a club is chosen, the button beside To opens its page.

Set transfer terms

Tick Set transfer terms to add more to the deal. Clear the box and the transfer has no terms, whatever the fields hold. Free agents have no selling club, so they can't have terms or a fee.

Set transfer terms open, with instalments, appearance fees, a sell-on and a wage contribution

Leave a field at 0 if the deal doesn't include it.

FieldSets
InstalmentsAn amount paid over a number of months, Every 6 months or Yearly. Football Manager shows it as part of the fee, so a fee of 30M with 5M in instalments shows as 35M.
League appsAn amount due after a number of league appearances.
International appsAn amount due after a number of international appearances.
Per league appAn amount for each league appearance, up to a maximum number of appearances.
League goalsAn amount due after a number of league goals.
Sell-onA percentage of the next fee. Tick Of the profit for a percentage of the profit instead.
Buy Back FeeThe buy back fee.
Wage contributionThe percentage of the new wage paid by the selling club. See Wage contributions.
Arrange a friendly between the clubsA friendly as part of the deal.

FMRTE passes the terms to Football Manager with the deal. How and when each one is paid is up to the game.

When a transfer can't be arranged

Where FMRTE can't arrange a transfer, Move now stays ticked and locked, and the page says why:

  • Arranging a transfer is not available with this game version or connection. Arranging needs Football Manager 27 on Windows or macOS. On Linux, use Move now or Loan.
  • A transfer can't be arranged while the player is out on loan.
  • A transfer can't be arranged while the player is frozen.
  • Players who are also staff can't be transferred this way.

FMRTE also refuses a transfer when the player already has one arranged or is already at that club.

macOS

Arranging a transfer on a Mac has not yet been run through to completion. Try it on a copy of your save first.

Move a player immediately

Move now puts the player at the new club straight away, without going through Football Manager's transfer process.

  1. Open the player and select Move to club.
  2. Choose the destination in To.
  3. Leave Transfer selected and tick Move now.
  4. Select Save Changes. A message confirms the move and the form clears.
  5. Check the destination squad and the player's contract in Football Manager.

Move to club with Move now ticked

FMRTE then:

  • moves the player into the destination club's first team and ends any loan
  • keeps the current contract, with today as its start and signing date. If it has already expired it is extended by a year
  • gives a free agent a contract copied from a player at the destination club
  • removes pending contract offers and stops any new-position training
  • records the player's old club as their previous club
info

No transfer fee is exchanged. Adjust club finances separately if wanted, and check registration and permits.

Loan a player

The player needs a full contract, so Loan is unavailable for a free agent. The loan starts straight away.

  1. Open the player and select Move to club.
  2. Choose the destination in To.
  3. Select Loan.
  4. Set the terms. They start as a one-year loan at the full wage, with no fees, and Can play in cup matches ticked.
  5. Select Save Changes. A message confirms the loan and the form clears.
  6. Check the parent club, loan club and terms in Football Manager.

A player who is already out on loan moves to the new loan club and the existing loan contract is updated. To change a loan later, open Loan Contract.

Move several players at once

Right-click a player list to arrange a transfer, move or loan for every selected player. The same menu is behind the ⋮ button in a player's header. This needs a licence.

  1. Select the players in a list, such as a club's Squads tab.
  2. Right-click the selection and open Move to club or Move to club on loan.
  3. Choose a club. Clubs run by human managers are listed. Other club… lets you choose any club in the next step.
  4. In the Move to club dialog, check the choices. It has the same fields as the Move to club tab, with the club already picked, and Loan selected if you came from Move to club on loan.
  5. Select Ok.

The right-click menu with Move to club open, listing a human manager's club and Other club

The Move to club dialog for 3 selected players, with Transfer selected

The fee, date and terms apply to each player. When it finishes, FMRTE reports what happened:

  • A player FMRTE can't move is listed with the reason, and the others still go ahead.
  • A free agent in a transfer goes on a free, without the fee or terms. In a loan, a free agent is listed as not moved.
  • Nothing moved: the dialog stays open and lists the reasons, so you can change your choices.
  • An unexpected failure stops the run and lists the players not attempted.

Swap two players

Each player takes the other's place. No fee is exchanged.

  1. Open Swap Player on the first player.
  2. Search for the second player. Both need contracts.
  3. Check the names and clubs, then save.
  4. Check both squads and contracts in Football Manager.

Future transfer list and editable deal details

The Future Transfers list

View Future Transfers opens a Future Transfer tab with every confirmed future transfer in the save. It needs a loaded game.

By default the list shows these columns:

ColumnShows
NameThe player
FromThe selling club, or the free-agent label
ToThe buying club
Transfer FeeThe agreed fee
Transfer DateThe day the move takes effect
TypeThe kind of deal

Select a header to sort. To show other fields, see Choose columns and their order.

Filter the list

Use Future Transfers - Filter below the list:

  • show all future transfers clears the filters and lists every deal. This is the default.
  • show unimportant future transfers lists only deals where both clubs have a reputation from 0 to 4000 and the buying club is not in a playable league.
  • Advanced filter options sets your own ranges. Tick buyer reputation, seller reputation, transfer value or Transfer Date and enter the range. playable league has three states: ticked for buying clubs in a playable league, cleared for the others, and the middle state to ignore it. Select Apply filter to update the list.

Both Transfer Date boxes start at the current game date.

Work with a deal

Select a row to show its Future Transfer details beside the list:

  • Player, From and To are links that open the player or club in a new tab.
  • The search button beside Player replaces the player in the deal. From follows the new player's club. If that player already has another future transfer, FMRTE warns you before saving.
  • The search button beside To changes the destination club. This only works for a deal with a contract offer.
  • Transfer Date must be at least one week after the current game date.
  • Value is the transfer fee.
  • When the deal has an agreed contract, its terms appear below and can be edited.

Select Save Changes to save the selected deal. A changed player, club or date is recorded in the edit history but cannot be undone there.

Double-click a row to open the player in a new tab. Right-click rows for the same player actions as other player lists.

By default the list uses the transfers FMRTE has already read from the game. To read them again each time you open the list, turn on Reload transfers when opening Future Transfers in Settings → Editing.

Release a player

Release on a free makes a player a free agent straight away. It needs a licence.

  1. Open the club and select the Squads tab, or open the player.
  2. Right-click the player's row, or several selected rows. On the player page, use the ⋮ button in the header instead.
  3. Select Release on a free.
  4. In Football Manager, check that the player is now a free agent with no club.

FMRTE then:

  • removes the player from the club's teams and from any loan club
  • deletes the loan contract and the full contract
  • records the club the player was playing for as the previous club
  • stops any new-position training
  • removes pending contract offers, such as an accepted renewal

No compensation or fee is paid. FMRTE does not ask for confirmation, and the release cannot be undone from Edit History. To bring the player back, use Move to club.

To release a coach or other staff member, see Release a staff member.

If FMRTE cannot create a contract

For Unable to create a new contract, follow the contract-creation checks.
