Troubleshooting

Start with the problem below. If it continues, use the support report template.

For a missing or vanished license, or checkout that will not complete, see licensing and purchase help.

FMRTE does not start

Install the current download for your platform. If Windows Security blocked it, check Virus & threat protection → Protection history.

If you're unsure about a detection, leave the file quarantined and send support the detection name and download link. Do not add an antivirus exclusion as a general fix.

Load Game cannot find or read the savegame

  1. Fully load your savegame in Football Manager.
  2. Check your exact game edition and update in your platform release page's Supported Versions list.
  3. Update FMRTE if a compatible release is available.
  4. Select Load Game again and leave Football Manager running.

If your game update is not listed, wait for a compatible release. Debug Mode and experimental features do not make unsupported games compatible.

Steam Deck or Linux cannot detect the running game

On Steam Deck, use Desktop Mode and complete the loading checks above. If the game still appears unsupported or is not detected, include these details in a support report:

  • Your Linux distribution and version, such as SteamOS, CachyOS or Linux Mint.
  • The Proton version selected for Football Manager, and whether Steam forces a compatibility tool for the game.
  • Your exact FMRTE build, Football Manager version and error, plus the FMRTE logs.

The error says FMRTE is for Football Manager 26 only

Update FMRTE, especially if you use BepInEx or another mod loader. If the message remains, compare a run with and without the loader and report both results.

Windows reports access denied or asks for administrator privileges

Update first. If the same access error remains, close FMRTE and try Run as administrator. Report whether that changes the result, administrator mode is not required for every launch.

Current Screen or miniFMRTE shows the wrong player

Current Screen opens the player you are viewing in Football Manager. Show in-game opens the player in Football Manager. Detection may fail on some game screens.

Check the player's name, club and unique ID. If the wrong player is shown, search by name in FMRTE and open the matching result.

Edits are not saving or changes revert

If an edit does not appear or a changed value did not stick, check both saving steps: Save Changes writes the edit in FMRTE, saving in Football Manager keeps it in the save file.

  1. Select Save Changes on the current FMRTE page.
  2. Select Reload to check the saved value. If the old value returns, check license status and validation messages.
  3. Reopen the matching screen in Football Manager.
  4. Save in Football Manager to keep the edit.

Some edits only become visible in Football Manager after advancing the game a few days as the game refreshes certain values on its own schedule, so continue a few days in-game before assuming the edit failed.

If a value keeps changing after time advances, the game may be recalculating it. See ability values or the relevant feature guide.

The updater finished, but FMRTE still shows the old build

Close the running app and reopen the installed copy. Check that your shortcut does not point to an older extracted copy or another edition. If it remains old, report the displayed version and updater result.

Move to club cannot create a contract

  1. In Football Manager, offer a player a new contract. For a loan move, arrange or extend a loan instead.
  2. Retry the move in FMRTE.
  3. If needed, restart Football Manager, load the savegame and retry once.

Check the resulting club and contract. Report persistent failures rather than repeatedly applying the move.

“Unable to open process” on macOS

Full Football Manager and Touch have different process protections. A working Touch setup does not establish support for the full game.

Ask support for the procedure matching your Mac chip, macOS and game edition before changing System Integrity Protection (SIP). Disabling it reduces security, an older workaround is not a universal solution.

If support directs you to Recovery, use Apple's instructions: hold the power button for startup options on Apple silicon, or Command-R at startup on Intel.
