# AI Assistant

> Documentation release: **FMRTE 27** (published release).

The AI Assistant answers questions about your loaded save, finds and opens FMRTE records, prepares edits for your review and can repeat a check for you on a schedule.

> **API KEY REQUIRED FOR REMOTE PROVIDERS**
To use a remote provider such as OpenAI or Anthropic, you need **your own API key from that provider**. Local models served on your computer through **Ollama** or **LM Studio** do not need a key.

## Get started

1. [Set up a provider](https://docs.fmrte.com/tools/ai-assistant/set-up-a-provider.md) in **Settings → Tools → AI Assistant**.
2. [Load your savegame](https://docs.fmrte.com/getting-started/load-game.md).
3. Select the **AI Assistant** button in the toolbar to open the [chat panel](https://docs.fmrte.com/tools/ai-assistant/chat-panel.md).
4. Ask a question, or select one of the starter prompts.

## What the assistant can do

The assistant works through FMRTE itself. It reads the save that is loaded in FMRTE and opens records in the same tabs you use. Most tasks need a loaded save, and the assistant can load one for you.

While it works, the chat shows each step as a short line, such as **Running a query** or **Proposing an edit**. Select **Show lookup details** to see what it asked for and what came back.

### Find and read records

- Find players, staff, clubs, nations and competitions by name.
- Read a record's values, such as attributes, contract, wage or club details.
- List related records: a club's squad, staff, contracts, fixtures, affiliates, stadium, competitions, relations and rivals.
- Search players, staff or clubs with Advanced Search filters, or with the [Quick Search](https://docs.fmrte.com/scouting/quick-search.md) grammar ("young left-footed wingers").
- Query a whole collection, a squad or an earlier result, and sort or filter it, for example by role rating.

### Read player stats and rankings

- Compare up to eight players on up to eight Stats page metrics, using the same per-90 and sample rules as the **Stats** tab.
- Compare a player with others in the same position or role, in the same league or a top league.
- Rank a squad, an earlier result or a competition by one metric.

Stats are current-season figures or career totals. The assistant can't read past seasons one by one.

### Work with FMRTE

- **Load the game**: start FMRTE's normal load of your current Football Manager save, or reload it when you ask.
- **Open the current screen**: open the player or staff member you are viewing in Football Manager, like the toolbar's **Current Screen** button.
- **Open a tab**: open a player, staff member, gamer, club, nation, competition, stadium, injury or official.
- **Open search results**: show the records it found in the **Search Results** page, up to 200 at a time.
- **Read presets**: list your presets and describe what each one does, without running it.

### Propose edits

The assistant never changes your save while you chat. Every edit is a **proposal** that appears as a card in the chat, and nothing is written until you approve it. Proposals cover field changes, injuries, relations, shortlists and presets. See [Edit proposals](https://docs.fmrte.com/tools/ai-assistant/edit-proposals.md).

### Repeat a check on a schedule

Ask the assistant to check something every week or month, in in-game time, and it reports back when something new turns up. See [Recurring tasks](https://docs.fmrte.com/tools/ai-assistant/recurring-tasks.md).

## Ask about your save

1. [Load your savegame](https://docs.fmrte.com/getting-started/load-game.md).
2. Open the assistant panel and choose the provider profile and model.
3. Ask a specific question, naming the club, players and values you want to inspect.
4. Check the returned records and values before you rely on the answer.

The assistant captures the current record context when you send a message. Navigating afterward does not retarget that message. Model capabilities and connection errors can affect which requests and attachments work.

### Example questions

Use the names from your own save. These requests inspect or open records and ask for no edits:

| Task | Example prompt |
| --- | --- |
| Compare two players | “Compare Diogo Costa and Thiago Silva at FC Porto. Show their current Determination values and identify each player by name and ID.” |
| Scout your squad | “Find FC Porto first-team players aged 21 or younger. Show their current ability and potential ability, sorted by potential ability.” |
| Find matching players | “Find young left-footed wingers with good dribbling and open the matching records in Search Results.” |
| Inspect contracts | “Show Diogo Costa's contract expiry date and wage. Do not change anything.” |
| Navigate to a record | “Find FC Porto in Portugal and open its club page.” |

For descriptive player and staff searches, see the [Quick Search triggers](https://docs.fmrte.com/scouting/quick-search.md). The assistant can use the same search grammar. Check the returned filters and records rather than assuming every natural-language request has an exact match.

## If the assistant is unavailable

Check that the assistant toggle is on and your provider profile is set up. For connection failures, check the endpoint, credentials and available model, then retry **Test** in the provider settings. A remote provider with a missing API key needs its key before you can send a message.
